Investment: $95,780

Funding body: The Australian Government’s  Building Better Regions Fund

Project purpose: Monto Agricultural Strategy aims  to support the development of meaningful and    long-lasting resilience by addressing the fundamental economic and Natural Resource Management foundations of the region

Key achievements:

          • Access to funding source not generally accessed by BCCA previously
          • Great input from the community into the strategy
          • Launch of the strategy at an event attend by   50 locals

The $481.6 million Building Better Regions Fund supports the Australian Government’s commitment to create jobs, drive economic growth and build stronger regional communities into the future.

BCCA developed an agricultural strategy for the Monto district based on careful analysis of current agricultural practices in the area and an assessment of likely changes in agricultural markets. The strategy included a plan for long-term success for local agriculturalists while providing a vision for agricultural and environmental sustainability. The strategy considered economic, market, consumer and environmental trends to find fresh and innovative opportunities that suit growing conditions in the North Burnett and drive productivity growth along the supply chain to yield financial reward for growers, the local economy and the wider community.

BCCA conducted a survey which was mailed to all landholders within the Monto district and circulated on the Burnett Catchment Care Association Facebook page. This survey was used to collect data from Monto residents in order to better understand the existing agricultural situation and to direct the Ag Strategy going forward. Survey respondents indicated that the top five factors that affect profitability of Monto business were market reliability; pest, weed and disease issues; Increased scale of enterprise; electricity costs; and input costs.

The official launch for the agricultural strategy was held on 29 August 2019, with Mr Ken O’Dowd MP, Federal Member for Flynn performed official opening duties.
